Using a special X-ray technique, scientists have unraveled how Da Vinci was able to create such incredible skin tones and shadows. The study showed his used a method of painting known as “sfumato”, which is based on layering the paint.
They weren’t, however, able to determine how he did it without leaving brushstrokes.
