Some cherry trees gave their lives for Jefferson Memorial
The beautiful cherry trees that line the tidal basin in our nations capital were once at the center of a dramatic fight. During the term of Franklin D. Roosevelt, there was apparent outrage over the proposal to do away with hundreds of the trees to build the Jefferson Memorial.
According to the administration at the time, the controversy was nothing but “flim-flam” created to embarrass FDR and the government and sell more newspapers.
